Want to teach students to really think about what they're reading? Have them code text!

While students read independently, with a partner, or in a small group, they write symbols representing their thoughts about the text. My class came up with the symbols on this document which gave them ownership! Students use the Text Coding Recording Sheet to choose a few codes and write about them=increases accountability.

Requires a few mini-lessons, but once students know how to code on their own it's great to do at a literacy center or for morning work!
