Description

This lesson is based upon a quick activity that should be repeated frequently throughout the school year with increasing degrees of difficulty to meet the educational needs of the students. It is an activity that can be used from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Anytime the students are being dismissed ask them to line-up based upon their number cards. As a middle school teacher, this activity was part of my classroom management bag of tricks; my students were never dismissed by the bell; they were dismissed by me. Several sets of cards are available to challenge the students repeatedly. In a given set you might find multiple representations of the same number. For example: five, 5, 5 pennies, 5 dots, 5 inches, 5℉, 5 apples, etc…. In later grades you might also represent five as √25 and/or |-5|.
