Description
This bundle will help address phonemic awareness among your kids. With a focus on word parts (rimes), this product has posters, activities, and letter cards to focus kids on parts of words to increase their reading and equip them with a strategy to use when they come to words they don't know.
A common strategy is to look for a part you know in an unfamiliar word or "if you know this word, you can read this one" but they need to know how to read those parts.
Here's What's Included:
- Phonics posters with common rimes; colorful and come in two parts that allows for a longer size poster. These can be used to brainstorm words with a given word part, thus rhyming words. Posters can then be displayed as references when kids are reading and writing. There is also a blank template of the set so that you can type a rime or chunk I may not have included.
- Letter cards-These cards come in color and black-line and serve as an excellent tool for demonstrating how to blend and/or segment words. There are over rimes, digraphs, blends (l, s, r), vowels, and consonants. Each of the fore-mentioned are a different color, which helps the reader to "chunk" the letters together. You can use these in a small group or with a large group as they measure 2.25 x 1.50 inches. Great to also project with a document camera. I would suggest storing them in a file box and using blank dividers and labeling each according to rimes, vowels, digraphs, consonants, and blends. The second set, which is black-line can be printed on colored cardstock if you want to save on ink. I would suggest printing the different vowel rimes each on a separate color, as well as the onsets. The visual effect is useful when demonstrating to kids. These would also be a great addition to any existing word study program.
- Slide-n-Read-Kids absolutely love using these sets. With over 50 letter cards and strips, you will have more than you would need. Each set is numbered (the strip/card) so you can keep them together. I would store each set in a gallon plastic bag and with a permanent marker write the chunk or rime on the bag. These can be used in a literacy center, as part of an intervention, or given to kids for extra practice. The letter cards have the rime in color but the letter strips are black-line letters. Additionally, kids can use the "Real or Nonsense?" worksheet. As they slide and read to create a new word, they can record whether the word is read or nonsense. This is terrific for word reading fluency! This also comes with a blank template of letter strips if you want more! Lastly, I created 10 extra letter strips that can be standalone strips or you can print and attach to the back of the numbered ones for front and back practice!
- Word Hunt-I created a generic word hunt form that you can either hand write or type onto the sheet the focused word part your class is studying. You don't have to limit it to the rimes but kids can hunt for blends, digraphs or other vowel combinations in the books they read. Then they jot the words they find on the sheet.
- Common Rime chart-This chart contains even more rimes and is available in three designs; two different colored design and black and white. These would be a super reference as posters or attached to a file folder and laminated. Each chart contains the rime, a picture, and the word.
I know this bundle will meet your phonemic awareness needs while strengthen your readers ability to decode and decipher real from nonsense words in the process!
