Communicating with Lego

Description

This is a GREAT activity showing my future engineers how important communication is in product development. This is adapted from an activity a friend of mine found and we tweaked it to fit our engineering classroom.

Basically students are playing Telephone to take a project from the client's vision to completed solution. Students are given job titles of Client, Sales Rep., Engineer, and Contractor. Clients work with Sales Reps to create a Lego model, then Sales Reps communicate with Engineers, who tell the Contractors what to build. Engineers can make sketches to share with the contractors by using the information the Sales Reps provide. Contractors and Clients do not directly communicate with each other.

The object is to see which group's contractors can build a Lego model as close to the client's version - which they never see. Afterwards students debrief on the communication process and ways to make it better.
