Description

Knowing the names of various places in the community is an important vocabulary skill for ELLs. Young learners also need to practice reading and writing community place names. This set of sort cards worked great for my older ESL students when they were trying to learn all of the various names of community places.

Sort Cards: The first card has the term, the second a picture. To use these cards:

1. print on cardstock (tip: print sets on different colors for ease of sorting later)

2. Laminate for durability (tip: I find cold lamination to be the longest lasting)

3. Cut the cards

4. Mix 1 set of cards in a bag.

5. Give students the bag and allow them to match the definition cards to the term cards. (The pictures help here—students know to match a picture card with a non-picture card.)

Also available:

CommunityPlacesVocabulary Activities Set (includes these sort cards and other activities)

CommunityPlacesTaskCards:WheredoIneedtogo?

What Are You Doing At…? Community Places, Present Simple, Present Continuous Game

CommunityPlacesGuesstheWordPowerPointGame

Community Places Vocabulary Practice Bundle (includes this activity and all those listed above)
