Description

This product is a great tool for your students to use when they begin to practice comparing basic fractions with unlike denominators. You will love the Fraction "TIPS" sheet that is a reference chart for your students to use when they are comparing fractions. Each fraction in this resource has only a numerator and denominator. Your students will CUT out the fraction comparison cards from the Student Cutting Sheet. Then students will SORT the fraction comparison cards by the “TIP” (rule) that helps to compare them. Students will then MATCH each fraction card by gluing it under the correct “TIP” (rule) that applies to the fractions being compared. They will glue their answers on the recording sheet. Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
