Description

Make comparing populations using measures of center and measures of variability a blast with this self-checking digital pixel art activity. Includes 2 Google Sheets with 2 separate images to population inferences in the 7th grade statistics unit. Students will calculate mean, median, mean absolute deviations (m.a.d), interquartile range and range to compare between the two populations.

Note: This product is part of the 7th grade statistics pixel art bundle. Purchase the bundle for the best deal!

This product covers the common core standards:

7.SP.B.3 Informally assess the degree of visual overlap of two numerical data distributions with similar variabilities, measuring the difference between the centers by expressing it as a multiple of a measure of variability.

7.SP.B.4 Use measures of center and measures of variability for numerical data from random samples to draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.

Includes 2 Google Sheets…

✅ Pixel Art Google Sheet #1: Comparing Populations using Measures of Center (Mean, Median, MAD, etc)

✅ Pixel Art Google Sheet #2: Comparing Populations using Measures of Variability (Range, Interquartile Range, etc)

✅ Instructions for use with Google Classroom and non-Google-Classroom platforms.

✅ Printable PDF worksheets for students to show work before typing into Google Sheets. (optional)

Each correct answer reveals part of two different mystery images perfect for any time of the year. Plus, there’s an optional printable PDF worksheet with work space to allow students to show work on paper if desired. Easy to assign virtual or in-person, and with Google Classroom.

Informally assess the degree of visual overlap of two numerical data distributions with similar variabilities, measuring the difference between the centers by expressing it as a multiple of a measure of variability. For example, the mean height of players on the basketball team is 10 cm greater than the mean height of players on the soccer team, about twice the variability (mean absolute deviation) on either team; on a dot plot, the separation between the two distributions of heights is noticeable.
Use measures of center and measures of variability for numerical data from random samples to draw informal comparative inferences about two populations. For example, decide whether the words in a chapter of a seventh-grade science book are generally longer than the words in a chapter of a fourth-grade science book.
