" I used this Digital Escape Room as an in-class grade. The students were engaged and often conferred with others when arriving at an incorrect answer. I allowed them to sort through their mistakes before intervening to assist. "

Description

An engaging math escape room for reviewing complex number operations in algebra 2. Students must unlock 5 locks by simplifying 20 expressions involving imaginary numbers with addition, subtraction and multiplication. Questions are grouped 4 per puzzle, resulting in five 4-letter codes that will unlock all 5 locks.

The entire activity is housed in one GOOGLE Form. There are no links to outside websites. The 4-letter codes are set with answer validation so that students cannot move to the next puzzle until they enter the correct code. Includes answer key.

To add the digital escape room to your Google Drive: please open the PDF and click the button on page 3.

A printable PDF version has also been added to the file. Students can work in groups, each group starting at a different puzzle. Once done, students check the NEXT STEP box for which puzzle to visit next.

My students enjoyed using this resource to reinforce the concepts learned. I provided this in lieu of a trad test and they loved the idea of not answer questions in columns.

I used this activity as an extra assignment for students who needed additional practice with imaginary numbers and as a make-up assignment for students who had missed a group activity in class. One thing I particularly liked was that some of the problems had similar answers, which meant that students had to pay close attention to their work. (I even got tripped up on a couple of them the first time I looked!) With 9 possible answers for four problems, students couldn't just "guess and check" their way to the escape key, too.

My students were unfamiliar with escape rooms, and this was a fun way to introduce them to the concept and for them to review some skills.
