Description

Are you working on complex proportions with your student(s)? Well... this secret message activity will amuse your 7th, 8th, or 9th grade math students while learning how to solve such problems. Your students' objective is to solve a series of these problems that are displayed on a chart. The answer to each problem represents the corresponding letter. There are blank lines with a number under each line. Those numbers represent the answers to the equations. After the students solve the equations, they will have to put the correct letter on each line to figure out the puzzle.

How to play / How to use:

1. Solve the problems in the bottom chart

2. Each answer corresponds with a letter

3. Put the corresponding letter above the blank lines that have a number underneath

Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed.
Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
