The ‘Comprehension Bookmarks’ have been designed to support students’ development in comprehension. The bookmarks cover a wide range of skills and are designed to support the explicit teaching of comprehension as part of a balanced literacy program. There are 12 Bookmarks in total:

· Predicting

· Inferring

· Making Connections

· Analysing

· Critiquing

· Self-Monitoring

· Self-Reflection

· Setting

· Characters

· Plot

· Theme

· Text Structure

· Language Features

· Author’s Craft

· Text Type/Genre.

Each Comprehension Bookmark includes a brief definition of the skill and several questioning prompts for use with both Fiction and Non-Fiction texts. These prompts introduce children to the necessary skills required for critical think while reading.

They are an ideal resource for use during Independent Reading and an excellent resource to send home to support students and parents with distance learning!

NOTE: Remember, comprehension needs to be modelled to the class. Try selection one aspect of comprehension (summarising) and working through an example with the class – demonstrate and explain how to use the cards before students are asked to work in groups or independently.

In order to print the Bookmarks we suggest laminating this resource or printing on higher GSM card to ensure they’re suitable for daily classroom use.
