Description

This a Unit bundle of lessons/handouts on Conics. Students learn about the terminology used with all of the conics. Parabolas are introduced first involving the graphing of parabolas and applications of graphing parabolas (max/min problems). Students also analyze the axis of symmetry and vertex and complete problems involving these special features of a parabola. Next, students explore the similarities and differences of circles and ellipses, including graphing and writing the equations of both shapes. Students briefly explore some basic properties of the inverse variation hyperbola and complete problems involving inverse variation, including graphing of these figures. A summary of all of the conics is included as well as a sheet involving the identification of 20 equations as either parabolas, circles, ellipses, or hyperbolas. A cumulative unit review and unit exam are included. This is a nice unit for exposing students to the basics of conic sections.
