Description

Make teaching the difference between connotation and denotation straightforward and easy for middle school students, in printable worksheet format or digital. This scaffolded lesson includes an introduction to connotation and denotation, activities and worksheets to practice connotation of words, and practice with conotative meaning in a passage.

This is a complete lesson plan and student materials for introducing and practicing connotation and denotation. This lesson on connotation and denotation contains everything you need to print and execute in your middle or high school classroom. There is a digital option for distance learning compatable with the TpT Easel platform. This printable and digital lesson plan for connotation and denotation includes everything you need to introduce and practice connotation and denotation, including texts where students apply their knowledge of connotation and denotation.

Here's what you'll get:

1 . A Do Now Opener: Students decide between two words which they would rather be described as. This helps get them thinking about two words with the same meaning having a different connotation.

2. A short reading on connotation and denotation

3. Two activities for sorting words by their connotation: These are words that are familiar to most students to really help them hone in on how words with the same meaning can have a different connotation.

4. Two passages to practice determining connotation from word choice

5. An exit ticket, or mini-assessment, where students determine connotation from word choice.
