Description

PROJECT DETAILS: This project involves students creating a “Green” City that focuses on using natural resources to stay environmentally friendly. Working in pairs or groups, the students will be in charge of designing a map of the city, writing a descriptive paragraph of the city , and generating a list of laws for their city in a PowerPoint presentation. This project was designed to be used as a follow-up project to a series of lessons/ unit/ chapter pertaining to our Earth’s Natural Resources and Conservation.

This project was originally created for a fifth grade class, but can easily be adapted to other grade levels (especially ones that are familiar with PowerPoint.)

This project has three main objectives:
-To have students identify ways in which we can conserve energy.
-To have students be inventive and creative and allow them to take initiatives into solving world problems.
-To have students create a PowerPoint Presentation using clip art, animation, and design.

This packet includes:
- teacher guidelines and ideas (presented in PowerPoint...the slides have notes attached)
- detailed student handout explaining expectations for the project
- a grading rubric with student expectations
- a sample PowerPoint presentation to use to demonstrate how students will set up theirs for the project (2 sample student maps are given as well).

Enjoy! Have fun unleashing the students creativity and power for a green planet. This project could tie in nicely with Earth Day in April or any time of the year. We always need to be aware of the effects that we have on our planet.

THis was such a fun activity to do with the students. Had to modify a few things to accommodate learning disabilities in the classroom, but overall, Good purchase.

My students enjoyed this project a lot. I used it with my 6th grade computer class who was just finishing a unit on natural resources, so I tied it in with that. The enjoyed being able to take something they were learning and expand on those concepts in computer class, al while learning to create a slide show.

I used this as a culminating activity at the end of my unit on Conservation. I did make one small tweak in requiring textual evidence from the texts we read over the course of the unit in support for each law created. I used this with my 8th graders, so felt that piece was important to me to making this project rigorous.
