This Context Clues for 4th Grade Task Card Bundle has 3 sets of Common Core task cards (96 cards) that will help your students practice identifying word meaning using context clues. Each card has a short story with a fourth grade vocabulary word that is underlined and students choose the correct meaning from the three that are listed.
Context clues can be tricky, but this type of concentrated practice can help strengthen reading skills. Kids love using task cards and they are an effective way to give kids the practice they need without being faced with a huge amount of text to deal with.
I really do love task cards for so many reasons and one of the main reasons is their versatility. You can use them in a literacy center, in small groups, or even individually. They can be used for fast finishers or as an end of the unit assessment. Another option is to use one card at a time with the whole class. I like to keep a stack of cards on my desk that go with whatever concept we're working on and pull a few of them out to do together whenever we have a few extra minutes.
My favorite way to use task cards though, is to use them as a rotational activity. Once you print out the record sheet for each child and station the cards at different places around the room, you’ll be ready to go. You can run this activity like a "Scoot" game and call out “Scoot” after a few minutes as a signal for kids rotate to the next station. Or depending upon the class, you can let the kids rotate around the room to any card that's open. I love to send them on this "scavenger hunt" in buddies because I like to hear the kids collaborating on their answers. An added bonus using the cards this way is that your kids will be able to get out of their seats and move…kind of like a brain break and a learning activity all at once!
The task cards can be printed in color or grayscale and can be laminated and used again and again. Baggies are great to store them in or you could hole punch each card's corner and put them all on a ring. A plastic shoe box with dividers works really well to keep them organized.
I think these cards will become one of your “go to” sets that you count on using year after year. I really like them and hope you do too!
