  1. "Density Creates Currents" Article and Questions*: Students read an article about how density creates currents in various situations, such as ocean currents, weather, plate tectonics, and currents in heating homes. Then, students answer text-dependent follow-up questions.
  2. Convection Worksheet*: This straightforward convection currents worksheet has two diagrams to analyze. Students will answer questions about convection currents in liquids and gases based on the diagrams.
  3. Modeling Convection Hands-On Activity: This convection activity can be used as a teacher demo or a hands-on student activity. It effectively demonstrates a convection current using very easy supplies.
  4. Convection in the Mantle Coloring Page: This is not your average coloring sheet! Students will color a diagram of convection in the mantle based on instructions in the document, but then also answer analysis questions about what the diagram is showing. It's much more rigorous than a coloring sheet.
  5. Hot Air Balloon Text & Questions (FREE BONUS)*: Students read a brief text about how convection works in a hot air balloon and then answer text-dependent questions. Great as homework!

Emphasis of atmospheric circulation is on the sunlight-driven latitudinal banding, the Coriolis effect, and resulting prevailing winds; emphasis of ocean circulation is on the transfer of heat by the global ocean convection cycle, which is constrained by the Coriolis effect and the outlines of continents. Examples of models can be diagrams, maps and globes, or digital representations. Assessment does not include the dynamics of the Coriolis effect.
