Description

Students plot and identify coordinate points in this activity that doubles as a fun way to display student work.

*If you need a similar activity for all 4 quadrants: Coordinate Graphing Pennant {4 QUADRANTS}

Included in this activity are 30 pennants, an optional student answer sheet and an answer key. Also included are 2 extra pennants that allow you to give your own coordinates.

Once a pennant is complete, it can be hung along a string in your classroom to show the world that, "Hey, we know how to plot coordinate pairs!"

Each group of students can be given a set of pennants, scissors and either glue, tape or a stapler. Students can be in charge of cutting out the pennants. Groups can compete to see which group can complete the most pennants or your entire class can add pennants to one string as they complete each one. You may also choose to have your students color their pennants to add to your classroom décor.

This was a good way to kick off the topic at the beginning of 6th grade since they covered this in 5th grade. A good stepping stone to all four quadrants.

A cool task for students to quickly demonstrate their understanding of what they had been learning in class and help create a display for the classroom!

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
