We always try to select grade appropriate clips, but each state, district, and classroom have different expectations, so please review all content before showing to students. The second part of the unit is based around understanding how fashion has shifted across time. This is integral to the costume design process! Students will start to develop a working knowledge of the clothing and fashion choices for the different decades with this assignment.

In this assignment, students choose 3 decades from a list. For each decade they must complete a slide showing the mens fashion from that decade, the women's fashion, and they have a slide where they describe the fads and trends that were present. There are example slides so students can see what's expected of them and a rubric so they know how they are graded.

This assignment is no prep! It already includes instructions, examples, a rubric, and slides to be filled out by students! You can run this as a choice assignment (students decide on the decades they want to research) OR you can assign all the decades so that they are all covered.

This is EASILY lengthened OR shortened as needed. Currently it's built such that students choose 3 decades, but you could do just 1 or 2, or turn it into a longer project where they do all of them! It's also up to you whether you want students to present their findings to the class/in groups or just simply hand in the work.

This is built in Powerpoint, but easily uploads into Google Slides instead. It is fully editable and already has slides created that students then fill out and copy and paste pictures into.

The third part of this unit is a Costume Design Practice Project is based on Edgar Allan Poe's classic story Cask of Amontillado.

Because this story is nice and short, and only includes 2 primary characters that need costumes, students can quickly work through the many steps of costume design including:

  1. Read the short story or play
  2. Research the author and time period
  3. Develop Renderings (online images or hand drawn)
  4. Justify Design Choices (explain the costume pieces/colors chosen)
  5. Make a Costume Plot
  6. Make a Costume List
    Students Will Also:
  7. Self-Assess themselves on the Project Rubric
  8. Reflect on the Project

Everything you need for students to do each of the above steps is included. Tables are already created for them to fill in for the Plot and List. Websites are provided for the research (students could do more extensive research on their own beyond those websites if they or you like).

This project can be completed with the free full version of Poe's Cask of Amontillado short story OR you can purchase our Script Bundle for Cask of Amontillado which includes a 7 minute play version with original language, a 15 minute version with original language, or a 15 minute version with updated modern language. This is great if you want a shorter script that can actually be performed in class, or if you need easier language for students who struggle with Poe's older language.

This project is built for the design process, but if you wanted to extend it for students to actually perform it and pull costumes from costume storage or their own homes, that could be easily done.

This resource includes a rubric for assessment and is fully editable so it can be adjusted for the needs of your students. You WILL need students to be able to access a computer or tablet as the research portion requires internet searching. This will probably take 2-3 hours from start to finish depending on how quickly your students read and work.
