Description

Teaching the Counting Back Strategy? This Counting Back resource helps students learn and practice the counting back subtraction strategy in a way that builds number sense and meaning.

Easily use these counting back strategy activities for math centers or small groups. Simply print the task cards on color cardstock, laminate, and have students write on them with dry-erase markers - making them super engaging and highly effective.

You can also use this Counting Back Strategy resource as a scoot activity. Each card has a number and a recorded sheet is included. Tape the cards up around your room and get students up out of their seats and moving.

As your students practice the counting back strategy, they will make mental connections with the numbers and equations - helping them memorize the subtraction facts in a meaningful way.

This resource works great for whole group instruction as well. Everything you need for a full counting back lesson is all here in one place! Saving you time - No more hours searching the internet!

Here’s what’s included in this Counting Back Strategy resource:

  • Display Pages: These are the landscape pages. Project these on your whiteboard to introduce the “I can” statement and to teach the counting back strategy. These are perfect for direct instruction and provide a very visual learning experience for students. Simply model solving the counting back examples or have students help you. A notes page is included to guide you on using these pages.

  • Counting Back Worksheets: Print these off for students. Do a couple problems together and have students do the rest by themselves. Great for low-prep guided practice and independent practice!

  • Task Cards & Scoot Activity: Print these on cardstock and cut the task cards apart. You can laminate them and have students use dry-erase markers or tape the problems up around your classroom and use it as a scoot activity. Print the recording sheet for students. Students go around and solve the subtraction equations using the counting back strategy. They write their answers on the recording page. These get students up out of their seats and moving - making your lessons more engaging!

  • Puzzle Activity: Print these off and cut apart. Students line up the visual way to count back to it's equation and answer. I like to have students work with a partner. This gives them support as they do this fun, hands-on counting back activity!

  • Exit Tickets: Use these to quickly assess how students can count back to subtract. There are 3 different versions so that students can have a different ticket than the student sitting next to them. There is even a section where students self-reflect on how they understood the lesson. Use these during an observation and get high marks!

  • Answer Keys: Use the answer keys so that students can check their own work – saving you valuable prep time! Plus, students get immediate feedback.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
