Description

Use these differentiated fall (autumn) math centers to help students practice the addition mental math strategy of counting on (counting up). This counting on resource includes 8 centers of varying levels of difficulty - perfect for differentiation!

Students need to develop mental math strategies to help them solve addition problems quickly. In this set of centers and worksheets, students will learn to count up (or count on) to solve problems that include +1, +2, and +3. The skills in this set of centers increase in difficulty. Initially, students have dots (pumpkin seeds) in the addition problems to help them count on. Next, they count up using a number line. Finally, they practice with no additional support. The varying levels of support in this set make it perfect for your students as they grow in their addition skills. It is also an easy way to differentiate for the varied needs in your classroom.

The following 8 fall-themed games are included in this set:

•Pumpkin Seed Match (count on with “dots”)

•Pumpkin Smash War (count on with “dots”)

•Counting On - Or Not (sort facts - count on or not count on)

•Hopping Through the Pumpkin Patch (count on using a number line)

•Pumpkin Squeeze (counting on from the larger number in a problem)

•Leaping Through the Leaves (counting on with a number line)

•Fall Roll and Cover (adding by counting on )

Bingo (adding by counting on - 4 different bingo boards)

The set also includes 8 practice pages related to these skills. Also included are simple student directions with picture cues, providing your early readers the support they need to use the center independently.

The set of centers includes everything you’ll need except dice. Standard dot dice will work for most games, but numeral dice will be helpful for some games. You can purchase dice with numerals pre-printed, or make your own from blank dice. Blank dice with +1, +2, and +3 are also needed for a few games. I have included a printable die you can make for those games, if needed.

NOTE: All items that use the term "count up" are also duplicated with the term "count on."

Just started using this resource. We are working on counting on right now. We took the pumpkin cards with seeds and played War while building the numbers on ten frames. Kids loved it and another great way to show number sense with counting on.

Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
