Description

Students learn about ecosystems on Earth by creating a new one on an imaginary planet. This project is meant as a culminating project for students who have already been learning about the relationships between producers, consumers, and decomposers in ecosystems.

This download includes:

  • An overview
  • A PBL Contract and Calendar
  • All necessary pages (1 energy source, 1 decomposer, 1 producer, 3 consumers)
  • A t-chart to list biotic and abiotic elements
  • A worksheet to sketch a food web
  • 2 critical thinking questions
  • 1 note to send home to families requesting a shoe box

This download supports the following NGSS:

5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.

5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.
