Description

Want to share the importance of giving to others in a practical, hands on way? Then you need this! Through various read aloud stories, students will learn about the financial insecurity that exists in the world. This project requires students create a Care Kit to donate to a family in need. They work through a 4 part process, making a list of needs, shopping for items with a budget, and sharing information about their Care Kit. You can use this project as a simulation of a real-life scenario, or you can do a class donation to a local charity.

This project is great for students Grade 3-5, in class and online. The student package is editable to modify for your students, along with many parts of the teacher slides to accommodate your project goals. It is a cross-curricular project that covers Math (Financial Literacy & Numbers) and Language (writing). The flexibility of options in this project allow you to personalize it to your class. Your students will enjoy this hands on project that teaches practical skills and builds on the importance of giving.

You can assign this project in pairs, or individually.

I did this activity with my summer "Math Camp". This included some struggling learners as well as those who wanted extra challenge. They loved being able to "shop" as we thought about budgets with an emphasis on helping others.
