Description
This comprehensive curriculum is designed to help camp counselors facilitate engaging projects that integrate textile arts, Micro:Bit microcontrollers, and coding to introduce elementary students to arts-integrated computer science learning. Following the research-backed PRIMM (Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify, and Make) approach, the curriculum provides a flexible structure that can be delivered as 30 one-hour sessions or five six-hour sessions.
Students will design and create textile art, then bring it to life by coding with MakeCode on the Micro:Bit microcontroller, a credit-card sized computer. Counselors will guide students through group activities to explore the Micro:Bit's features, manage a MakeCode account, and install programs. The curriculum includes five different project options, each focusing on a unique coding concept, with a "zine" handbook guiding both the artistic process and key coding principles. By the end, students will have created an interactive art piece by modifying an existing design or building an original project. The curriculum also features a dedicated support website with instructional resources, example projects, and videos for self-paced exploration.
