Description
I use this lab to allow students to work in small groups to use basic materials to build a simple, small scale electromagnet out of a "D" battery, copper floral wire, electrical tape, and a screw. Students then test the electromagnet with both paperclips and safety pins, and adjust the strength of the electromagnet. This package includes both a PowerPoint with directions for the lab and a premade lab guide to help students apply content knowledge about electromagnets to build a small scale electromagnet. My 8th grade students LOVE participating in this lab! Attached zip file contains a PowerPoint and a Microsoft Office Word document. Is aligned with TN state standards for 8th grade science (physical science standard - 12.2 - describe the basic properties of an electromagnet).

It's a good lab, but whatever I did didn't work very well. About half my students were able to pick up 1 paperclip and the rest couldn't pick up any. Probably the particular floral wire that I bought wasn't a good enough conductor?
