Creating Your Own Podcast

Description

One of the most significant factors of the current BC (Canada) secondary curriculum is the creation of courses that acknowledge new technologies (e.g., podcasts) and their impact on our students' - read "future adults' " - lives. According to research I've included in this product, 'spoken word' media consumption has increased by an amazing 214% among Gen Zers (13-24) in the last decade; helping your students create a podcast, therefore, seems like a no-brainer, since it's a real-world vehicle by which they'll be able to develop and practice their skill sets in the areas of speaking, reading, writing and research. Annnnnd...it'll be FUN! You gotta bring the fun, now and then.

NOTE: This product was specifically created for the BC English Language Arts New Media 10 course; for non-BC teachers, there's a second title slide.

Aug. 26, 2023 - I might've known: the day after I uploaded this new resource, I've found three older posts (which is why they probably didn't come up high in my Google search results) from the New York Times (why am I not surprised they'd already seen the benefits of using podcasts in teaching?): Writing for Podcasts, Teaching Students How to Produce Their Own Podcasts and Making a Podcast That Matters. There are more resources, actually, but looking at these will get you to the others.

Nov. 22, 2023 - Canada's History magazine/website has an article for your Canadian history nerd students who might want to create their podcast on this topic.

Apr. 12, 2024 - The New York Times is hosting its 7th annual student podcast contest, open April 17 - May 15. Students are invited to create an original podcast of 5 minutes or less in length and submit them. Check out the results (they'll be posted, for sure) as examples for your class to learn from.

Sept. 20, 2024 - Since 2015, the NYT has invited students to participate in their weekly Film Club, in which they present a short documentary film from the New York Times and encourage them to engage in thoughtful dialogue and reflection. This year, the Film Club's tenth, they've created a new Film and Podcast Club!

Aug. 15, 2025 - Perhaps this article about Taylor Swift chatting with her manfriend Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason, on their podcast will be a good introduction to this product with your students, since her chat is described, in the article, as a 'watershed moment for a media format that has already outlived the device it was named for'. Who knew?! In searching for it online I found that it's just one of several describing their two-hour conversation.

Oct. 26, 2025 - I really like this New York Times piece titled The Podcast: Writing for Audio, which is part of the Learning Network's larger 2025-2026 writing curriculum.
