Description

Children and adolescents with language disorders have difficulty with critical thinking skills that are essential to make effective decisions. They do not have the linguistic skills that are required for analytical thinking or expressive language skills that are necessary for higher order language tasks. This requires comprehension of vocabulary, an ability to process language, background knowledge, and effective reasoning skills.

This tool will informally assess 6 key areas:

Inferences (WH Q's)
Problem & Solution
Cause & Effect- Level 1 & 2
Compare & Contrast- Level 1 & 2
Predictions- Level 1 & 2
Opinions & Reasons- Level 1 & 2

Speech-language pathologists or teachers should administer this data check or informal progress monitoring tool to children prior to beginning targeted intervention services in this area. It is intended for elementary & middle school age children. The entire tool may be administered or you can select the portion(s) of the tool that you would like to assess children’s language skills.

After several speech-language therapy or intervention sessions, read aloud the same sections previously administered in this informal assessment tool. This may be used for children with an identified speech language disorder or receiving Response to Intervention (RTI) for receptive/expressive language needs.

You should record the score on each form. You may also write the data on the summative progress monitoring form. This Critical Thinking Progress Monitoring tool will provide information about the skills children can and/or can not do on the date(s) of the informal evaluation. The results can assist in future speech/language therapy session planning or to make decisions for students in the RTI process in the public school system.

Good data probes for critical thinking skills. The inferences were too easy for my middle school students.
