This Current Events Article Assignment would work great in your Social Studies class as a way for students to see what is happening in the world around them and why it matters. Students will cut/print their article, write a one-page reflection, and share a 3-5 minute summary of the article with the class being sure to touch on the 5 main points included in the instructions. This works well when having students sign up to present on Fridays until everyone has shared (usually 3-4 per Friday).

If you're new to teaching Social Studies this is something you might have thought about doing but didn't know how to get it started. So all you've got to do is print, copy, and explain. The kids do the rest! Plus it might take the pressure off of coming up with something for the next few Fridays!
