Description

This PhET Lab guide can be completed digitally as an interactive handout with drag and drop elements or printed. Students are instructed how to build a baseline circuit to compare it to a tester circuit. Then, use the PhET simulation and lab guide to set up their circuits to answer the 4 testable questions provided: "How does [voltage, length of wire, type of material & wire diameter] affect the strength of electric current?" (NGSS PS2-3) Ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces.

By the end of the lesson, students answer the question, "What factors affect the strength of electric currents?" and are prompted to give a reason why/how increasing one variable affects the strength of electric current.

Concepts: independent, dependent and constant variables, voltage, voltmeter, amperes, ammeter, conductivity, insulators, how to use the voltmeter and ammeter, resistivity, direct/indirect relationships, baseline

All the stars! It can be very difficult to find engaging materials when your students are online, but this interactive lab was a hit with my physical science students. Screen captures of the settings and clear instructions, along with wonderfully formatted questions, allowed them to successfully complete the lab and share their learning. Thank you!

NGSSHS-PS3-2
Develop and use models to illustrate that energy at the macroscopic scale can be accounted for as a combination of energy associated with the motion of particles (objects) and energy associated with the relative position of particles (objects). Examples of phenomena at the macroscopic scale could include the conversion of kinetic energy to thermal energy, the energy stored due to position of an object above the earth, and the energy stored between two electrically-charged plates. Examples of models could include diagrams, drawings, descriptions, and computer simulations.
NGSSMS-PS2-3
Ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces. Examples of devices that use electric and magnetic forces could include electromagnets, electric motors, or generators. Examples of data could include the effect of the number of turns of wire on the strength of an electromagnet, or the effect of increasing the number or strength of magnets on the speed of an electric motor. Assessment about questions that require quantitative answers is limited to proportional reasoning and algebraic thinking.
NGSSMS-PS3-2
Develop a model to describe that when the arrangement of objects interacting at a distance changes, different amounts of potential energy are stored in the system. Emphasis is on relative amounts of potential energy, not on calculations of potential energy. Examples of objects within systems interacting at varying distances could include: the Earth and either a roller coaster cart at varying positions on a hill or objects at varying heights on shelves, changing the direction/orientation of a magnet, and a balloon with static electrical charge being brought closer to a classmate’s hair. Examples of models could include representations, diagrams, pictures, and written descriptions of systems. Assessment is limited to two objects and electric, magnetic, and gravitational interactions.
