Description

While students can often identify figurative techniques in use, they need practice in developing their use of them in their own writing. These paragraph writing prompt task cards provide them with that starting point, and aim to inspire students to write with more vivid imagery.

These prompts slides are designed to be used with Google Slides™, and students can type their paragraphs of writing directly onto them. Each one contains a unique prompt, along with specified techniques they have to incorporate.

Learning Objective

Students will develop their narrative writing, and be able to use figurative language techniques in their writing to shape tone and add imagery.

CONTENTS:

32 Digital Writing Tasks

There are 32 task cards (I slide per card), and students write their paragraphs directly onto the slides. Each one has a unique creative prompt, a helpful tip to focus writing, and two or three specific techniques which they have to implement in their paragraphs.

Glossary: Techniques Definitions

This is the second slide of the file, and covers all the techniques assessed in these task cards and is useful for students to use for reference.

I used about half the prompts as bellringers with my 8th grade class. This requires the students to already have a strong grasp of what each type of figurative language is. I really liked the summary slide, though. I shared that with my students as a resource. Some of the kids really got into these prompts. I love the encouragement to use various types of figurative language.

I particularly enjoyed the "helpful hints" underneath the prompts, such as to write the story first then go back to see where things could be tweaked to add the target figurative language goal

I used this resource with my advanced 8th grade English students to assess their overall understanding of figurative language. They were very comfortable reciting the definition of figurative language terms, and they seemed to be fairly comfortable identifying examples in text. This resource challenged them further by requiring them to actively incorporate figurative language into their own writing. Some found it quite challenging (in the best way), and I gained a much deeper understanding of who had a surface-level understanding versus who could put their understanding into practice!

I love all the resources from this seller. My students respond well to her lessons. These writing prompts were no different. Thank you for creating challenging and highly engaging lessons for my 8th graders. And, thank you for creating these as digital resources.
