Students prefer this large format diagram and this method of note-taking for clarity and organization.
► RESOURCE 2: Interactive Google Slide Activities (Editable, Google Slides & Options for Differentiation)
Using the DNA Structure - 8 Interactive Google Slides Activities, students will work through one (or more) of eight options of this activity to help them better understand the components that make up DNA. This resource is great for learning the topic, reinforcing concepts, homework, distance learning and paperless classrooms.
► RESOURCE 3: Individual Review Worksheet (Editable, Printable PDFs & Google Slides Options)
Using the DNA Structure Homework Review Worksheet, students can either review their understanding of DNA structure in class or at home. This one page sheet is also very handy for sub work as well as test prep. The worksheet contains 3 different tasks to keep your students engaged and reviewing terms and concepts in a variety of ways.
► RESOURCE 4: Early Finishers / Bonus Activity / Sub Plan (Editable, Printable PDFs & Google Slides Options)
Using the DNA Structure Crossword, with 32 terms, students can either work on their own, for bonus or just for extra reinforcement. As well, this can be done as a fun class competition to see who can finish the crossword the fastest (individually or in groups).
► RESOURCE 5: Fun Pair or Group Review Game (Printable PDFs with 2 Difficulty Levels)
Using the DNA Structure Tarsia Puzzle (18 Terms), students can review what they've learned about DNA structure in groups (or pairs). This gives them an opportunity to engage the material and each other while having fun.
► RESOURCE 6: Article with Questions for Science Literacy / Sub Plan (Printable PDFs & Google Slides Options)
In the Great Minds in Science Article #7: Rosalind Franklin students will learn about Franklin's achievements as a child; her research into the structure of coal which earned her a PhD; her apprenticeship for learning about X-ray diffraction; her appointment to work at King's College to help discover the structure of DNA; the tensions and hostilities with her research partner Maurice Wilkins; her success at obtaining excellent X-ray diffraction images of two forms of DNA; Wilkin's release of these images to a rival team (James Watson and Francis Crick) of researchers without telling Franklin; Franklin's research into the structure of plant viruses; Franklin's early death due to ovarian cancer at the age of 37 and the controversy over her not being acknowledged by the Nobel Prize committee. This is a great extension activity for classes studying DNA. Article questions and an answer key are also provided. This is a great way to introduce real life events and issues into your course that also directly relate to your curriculum.
► RESOURCE 7: Quick Assessment - 25 Mark Quiz with Two Versions (Editable, Printable and Self-Grading Google Forms Options)
Using the DNA Structure Quiz allows you to quickly assess your students' learning and understanding of DNA structure. There are two versions provided with full answer keys for easy marking. Each version has the same questions but they are presented in a different order. This deters cheating as it allows you to alternate versions of the quiz between students who sit side by side.
