Think Sheet DVD Dogs Decoded – Print and Digital format

NGSS Aligned: LS4-2, LS4-5

According to scientists, astonishing new research is revealing that dogs are far more than tamed wild animals. How is it that the wolf is our dog's ancestor? Not any of the other canids, the fox, coyote, or wild dog have such similar DNA. Wolves share up to 99.8% of the same DNA, how can dogs be tested for domestication traits, and are these traits genetic (nature) or environmental (nurture)?

** Digital Google Drive™ Ready for Distance Learning**

Dogs decoded examines the research that has tested our relationships with dogs. They compare taming wolf pups to dog pups, and fox domestication experimentation and artificial selection. Tests are conducted to measure intelligence with dogs taking non-verbal cues from humans, versus chimpanzees. How difficult is it to understand the sounds a dog makes and its meaning? How would human civilization have progressed without dog domestication? All of these are examined and more through this 55-minute PBS documentary.

This product requires access to the DVD or streaming video, “Dogs Decoded” NOT Included.

The student think sheets are easily differentiated for varying student grade levels or readiness. I often differentiate by asking students to complete 5 of the 10 prompts. Or for gifted and talented students, to compare and contrast the species being examined (wolf, fox, domesticated dog). It is engaging and well researched. The suggested resources and references help students apply what they have learned and conduct research projects, team projects, extension activities, and to share their take-away.

Allow 60-minute block to complete this film.

I hope you enjoy this project as much as my students and I do!
