Description
Do you do some type of daily editing or daily oral language review to practice the essential skills of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling? Could your students use more practice solving math word problems? Why not save precious teaching time and practice them at the same time! Makes great morning work or warm-up activity.
This packet includes daily editing word problems for 38 weeks (190 school days!!!) Common themes (apples, holidays, penguins, insects, etc.) and books (Frog and Toad, Tacky, etc.) are included. The strips are handed out to the student to glue in a notebook or on the back of a calendar page.
The first half of the packet includes punctuation and capitalization errors only with the suggestion to circle sight words. The second half of the packet does add spelling errors to increase difficulty.
Students can use green for a capital and red for ending punctuation or you can teach them editing marks such as underlining three times for a capital letter. I have used both methods over the years and they worked equally well with my first graders. I also teach my students to box math keywords to help them determine which operation to use. My students draw a picture and/or write an equation to show their thinking as well as label their final answer. Obviously, we build to this, with me projecting these and doing them together in the beginning to complete independence and sharing different strategies after 10-15 minutes later in the year.
*aligned to the Common Core standards 7/30/13
"Amazing resource! Genius to combine editing with Math! After they are done editing, they can solve the word problem! Amazingggggggg! Love this so much!" -Eliza G.
"The students love editing these problems and then sharing how they figured out the answer!" -Sandi N.
"Thank you so much for creating this!! What a time saver for me!!! I really appreciate it!!!!! Well worth the money!!!!!!!!!!" -Caroline M.
"I let my firsties discover that there was a math problem in the sentences. It took a few weeks and now its become a really fun part of their writing center!" -Melanie B.
"Love how this matches the time of year to keep it engaging! Thanks for your creativity!" -Penne L.
I added a version without the answer keys to the TpT Easel Activities tool. If you are not familiar, this tool puts a digital overlay over the pdf so your students can write or type on it. For this resource, I would suggest using the pen tool but there are also shapes and typing available, if you prefer. You can also add a text box if you'd like the students to type the equation or answer.
