Description

Take your students on a math journey that's truly out of this world! This no-prep activity for practicing decimal operations to the hundredths place combines math skills with creativity and problem-solving. It also comes in handy for financial literacy lessons or calculations with money.

Students become travel planners for a group of monsters, working with a budget to plan their ultimate galactic getaway. They’ll calculate costs for destinations, lodging, transportation, food, and activities—all while practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals in a meaningful and engaging way.

This out-of-this-world resource includes:

  • step-by-step instructions, plus differentiation tips to support all learners.
  • Save on printing or offer a digital option for students with the digital version.
  • clear, easy-to-follow guidance for independent or group work.
  • creative prompts to support students in solving problems.
  • student pages and menus.
  • answer keys and suggestions.
  • additional word problems. Extend learning with an extra set of practice problems tied to the space travel theme.
  • Decimal points are shown as periods (e.g., 4.65 is read as "four and sixty-five hundredths") to align with Canadian standards.

Ninja Note: Your students should already be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers with decimals. This activity practices these skills.

Actual quote from a student: "This is the first time I wasn't bored in math."

This resource aligns with:

  • Alberta Math Curriculum Grade 6 ©2022
  • British Columbia Mathematics Curricular Competencies Grade 6
  • Saskatchewan Mathematics Curriculum Grade 6 N6.4

This resource supports:

  • any grade level that has decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

It has been tested with students from grades five and six and students regularly ask if they can do it AGAIN! Sometimes we do it again and they pick different things for the trip. They LOVE it.

We use this resource to support our math units.

Great resource and project! Only issue was that it was a lot of paperwork (but for good reason). I just found my kids got a bit confused with the amount of paper they needed to keep track of.
