Description

While teaching fourth grade I noticed that my students need a lot of support with grasping and applying math concepts and strategies. These reference sheets are like cheat sheets or a study guide for the math concepts and standards we cover in DECIMALS.

Students glue the half sheets side by side into their math notebook and take their notebooks home daily to assist in homework or study for an upcoming quiz or test. Parents find these math reference sheets helpful too because it gives them a better idea of what and how we are learning today’s math.

I put the larger 8.5 x 11 reference sheets on a math reference wall or bulletin board in my classroom to support my lessons and my students’ learning. These also support my students in small groups for reteaching.

Includes:

•Focus Standards and Mathematical Practices

11 reference/cheat sheets in both full (8.5 x 11) and half sheets.

•Decimals: Place Value

•Relating Decimals to Fractions: Tenths

•Relating Decimals to Fractions: Hundredths

•Showing Equivalence

•Greater Than 1

•Comparing Decimals: Area Model

•Comparing & Ordering Decimals: Number Line

•Comparing Decimals Greater Than 1: Number Line

•Adding Tenths & Hundredths

•Relating Decimals to Money

•Relating Decimals to Money

I hope these reference posters & student supports are both helpful and useful to you and your students as they develop into mathematicians.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.
Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Mathematically proficient students make sense of quantities and their relationships in problem situations. They bring two complementary abilities to bear on problems involving quantitative relationships: the ability to decontextualize-to abstract a given situation and represent it symbolically and manipulate the representing symbols as if they have a life of their own, without necessarily attending to their referents-and the ability to contextualize, to pause as needed during the manipulation process in order to probe into the referents for the symbols involved. Quantitative reasoning entails habits of creating a coherent representation of the problem at hand; considering the units involved; attending to the meaning of quantities, not just how to compute them; and knowing and flexibly using different properties of operations and objects.
