READERS WILL

    • looking for
    • word parts
    • (prefixes, suffixes and roots) and
    • small words
    • they already know
    • inside gigantic words

  • LEARN TO RECOGNIZE and PRONOUNCE THE WORD PARTS FOUND IN MULTISYLLABIC WORDS
    • and read these word parts with automaticity

★Writing gigantic words in large print and isolating and focusing on the parts you recognize helps readers reduce the number of individual segments needed to decode a longer word.

Especially helpful for dyslexic and other readers who struggle to process multiple segments in words.

★Familiarity with the individual parts of multisyllabic words is a crucial component of the advanced decoding ability necessary in the intermediate grades and above. ★Greatly enhances readers’ ability to tackle more advanced reading levels – particularly RL 4.0 and above.

Finding success with gigantic words even adults might find challenging is highly motivating for readers who have previously struggled.

DESIGNED FOR READERS WHO★

  • struggle to sequence the multiple letters in long words
  • strugge to recognize or pronounce word parts in long words (prefixes, suffixes)
  • are not sure where to begin to tackle a gigantic word
  • struggle to successfully read content-area text that is at their decoding frustration level
  • struggle to successfully read fiction they would otherwise enjoy - because of the decoding challenges
  • are struggling to master rule-based decoding
  • may be losing confidence
  • will benefit from additional decoding support.

★RECOMMENDED FOR★

READING LEVEL: 2.0+

•This program is most useful for readers of any age who have achieved approximately second grade reading level or above.

•These readers have mastered many sight words, but may not have mastered beginning phonics.

•The lower the reading level, the more scaffolding and support will be required.

INTERVENTION:

GRADE LEVEL: GRADES 3-12+

Designed for struggling decoders in grades 3, 4, 5. The strategy is effective for grades 6-12 and adults, though the clipart level may vary.

WHOLE-CLASS INSTRUCTION: 3rd and 4th GRADE

This program is valuable for many on-grade-level readers in 3rd and 4th grade, as they begin to encounter many multisyllabic words in their reading.

Multisyllabic word study is

•helpful for many third grade readers,

•crucial for fourth grade through middle school readers,

•beneficial for struggling secondary decoders and

may be adapted for selected second or

•advanced first grade readers.

★NOTES★

★☛PLEASE NOTE: Words are NOT DIVIDED USING TRADITIONAL SYLLABICATION RULES!

This program DOES NOT USE THE OPEN and CLOSED SYLLABLE METHOD or SYLLABICATION SEGMENTATION RULES to decode multisyllabic words. Rather, it employs a STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS approach, using affixes as the doorway to decoding multisyllabic words.

★☛PLEASE NOTE: This is a DECODING activity, with emphasis on readers’ ability to decode longer, multisyllabic words encountered as their reading levels progress. Study of Word Part MEANINGS / Word MEANINGS is a separate vocabulary skill and is NOT covered by this activity.

★This program’s focus is on ASSISTING STRUGGLING READERS to RECOGNIZE WHAT THEY ALREADY KNOW INSIDE A LONGER WORD. Thus, this process requires readers to break words into parts each reader recognizes. This may DIFFER slightly from reader to reader, depending on the reader's prior knowledge. Thus, there may be more than one "right way" to break a word, since the goal of breaking a word is simply to help readers see chunks they recognize.

Example: One reader might see "re" and "act" in the word "reaction," while another might notice "re" + "ac" + "tion" and another might simply recognize the word "act." Others might see "react"+"tion" or "react" +"ion".

Example: In the word "fundamentally," one reader might see the word "fun" and another might recognize the word "fund." One might see "mentally" and another might see "ment" or "mental" or "men." Some might identify the word parts "al" + "ly" or the very common ending these two affixes make, "ally."

Any or all will help the reader decode the word more quickly and easily! Any part a reader can latch onto will provide them entry into the word and build success.

★There are often multiple recognizable parts inside a longer word and sometimes two or more word parts are combined to increase the efficiency of the decoding process. The goal is to lessen the number of letters and syllables a reader must decode in longer words.

★Some advanced “word parts” in this program are actually comprised of several prefixes or suffixes combined.

Example: “istically” = "ist" + "ic" + "al" + "ly"

Example: "ation" = "a" + "tion"

Example: "ally" = "al" + "ly"

Example: "ily" = "il" + "ly"

Example: "ity" = "it" + "y"

★Because a reader will break a word into parts (affixes, roots and small words) rather than syllables, some word parts (often roots) will have more than one syllable.

Example: "inter"

Example: "mega"

Example: "able"

I really like these products but I think they are very pricey for what you get. I would be much more willing to pay $5.00. Also, unless I were to buy the whole intervention (which I'm certainly not), the program is very hard to follow.

EDIT PS: These resources are being upgraded to include assessments and teaching flashcards. The summer resource upgrade has been completed and uploaded. This additional value is available to you now for the summer product. Just go to your My Purchases tab and redownload. The December resource upgrade is also coming soon and will be availabe to you at no extra charge in your My Purchases redownload tab. Thank you very much for your kind and helpful feedback. It is always helpful to get feedback on price point. I understand your thought about needing to buy the whole intervention in order to understand the program. It's an unconventional approach and a lot to digest in one bite. I'm working on ways to help teachers with this. I'm currently working to create a free course to guide teachers. I'm wondering if you feel this would be helpful? I'd love to know more about what would help you and other teachers follow the program more easily. If providing further feedback interests you, I'd love to hear more and am happy to provide you with complimentary resources in exchange. Thanks again for your feedback! Laura readingbyheart@gmail.com
