Description

Have your students learned the common syllable types and are ready to tackle more difficult multisyllabic words? These multisyllabic task cards are the perfect way to continue supporting your readers after they have learned and practiced the syllable types.

Why Are Multisyllabic Words Hard for Some Students?

Set for variability is when readers are able to be flexible when decoding. This requires them to "flex" or switch out vowel and consonant sounds to get an accurate pronunciation. This also includes flexing the vowel to the schwa sound (unstressed uh sound).

Some students struggle with this task and need more explicit practice flexing sounds. This is further made difficult if students struggle with vocabulary and are not able to flex a word after decoding to the correct pronunciation. For example, a student may not be able to flex vowels to shwas for words they do not know.

About the Multisyllabic Words Task Cards

Each task card includes the following:

  1. A multisyllabic word scaffolded into syllables
  2. A sentence that uses the word

There are two versions of the task cards. The two versions differ in how the multisyllabic word is scaffolded.

Version 1: The words are broken into syllables in a pyramid fashion. For this version, encourage students to connect each syllable and add on the other with each line they read. This allows them to blend the syllables successively.

Version 2: The words are written normally, but there are scoops under the syllables to help with chunking and blending.

About the Multisyllabic Words Chosen

The multisyllabic words (3+ syllables) chosen in this resource were carefully selected to meet these criteria:

  • Contain at least 2 common syllable types in a "pure" form that follow the rules
  • Are common words that are more likely to be found in students’ reading and perhaps their spoken vocabulary. This will help them decode the syllables and then tweak their pronunciation/flex the sounds to fit a known word.

For a complete list of the words chosen, scroll down.

About the Sentences

The goal for the inclusion of a sentence is to give students practice using the word in a sentence (and re-reading it fluently after decoding) AND to give a little context if the word is unknown to the student.

Supporting and Scaffolding Students Further

Based on your students' abilities, you may need to support students further. Here are some ways:

  1. Label or discuss some of the more challenging syllables or the schwas for students on the cards in the second version.
  2. Have the students first label the syllables that they do know and then work with the students to identify the ones they are having trouble with.

If you need help supporting your students if they struggle with the syllables, there is a word analysis reference included on pages 8-10. There is also a student poster for reading multisyllabic words on page 11.

About the Digital Version

Digital versions of the task cards are also included. The words and sentences are exactly the same, but have been redesigned for Google Slides. For more information on the digital options or to get access to the Google Slides version, see pages 6-7 of this PDF.
