Description
This is an animated PowerPoint presentation – a virtual blending board, if you will – to use with your students to practice decoding short vowel words with initial r-blends. The arrows move to point to different graphemes as students sound out and blend words.
WHAT’S INSIDE?
This PPT presentation contains more than 50 word slides to allow for explicit blending instruction and practice.
- br-, cr-, dr-, fr-, gr-, and tr- words, separated and then mixed
- 4 sentences with target patterns used in context

PEDAGOGY
Beginning readers need to be explicitly taught how to sound out and blend unknown words. This will require lots and lots of modeling of using the alphabetic code: matching graphemes and phonemes.
The goal of code-emphasis phonics instruction is to help students automate sound-symbol associations to decode words accurately.
Through lots of practice and exposure, they will begin to recognize some whole words automatically. Until then, though, students need to be in the habit of looking at all of the letters in a word in order to sound it out accurately.
Why are the blends in one box?
These are blending boards, not sound boxes. For fluent reading, we want students to be able to recognize and produce blends at once instead of having to sound out the individual sounds every time. Do we want students to be able to separate the sounds? Yes, of course, but that isn't the goal when using blending boards for decoding practice.
*Orton-Gillingham blending boards have blends on the same card.
