Description

This lab is a simple activity that has students explore the concepts of density calculations by calculating the displacement. Students then calculate error to determine their percent error.

I use this lab as an introduction to chemistry topics, density calculations, and discussion of sources of error.

The file includes the procedure page and student lab page with three conclusion questions. The file also includes a virtual version of this lab that can be used for distance learning.

I was very happy to find this lesson. Since my school is all-virtual, finding interactive labs is not an easy task. I did need to significantly modify the directions for my class so that they were able to follow it step-by-step. Truth told, I modify about 90% of materials I buy/find/get from others to make them specific to my class, so this was not something I'm complaining about. When I previewed it, my 21-year old college student son was around and commented that he thought it was engaging and used it for about 20 minutes. When I introduced it to my class, I did model it by sharing my screen and felt it was easy to use with some explanation. I assigned it earlier this week, and have not had any comments back from a student that they did not understand it or were having difficulty. By far, this is one of the more engaging labs I've seen. I intend to use it in the future, regardless of if students are virtual or not.
