Description

In this printable, ready-to-use resource, students learn about the key concepts of density and buoyancy. They learn that density describes how much mass is packed into a given volume, influencing whether objects feel heavy or light for their size. They also learn that buoyancy is the upward force that allows objects to float in fluids, determined by the volume of fluid displaced by the object.

The worksheet will help students understand why objects with lower density than the fluid will float, while those with higher density will sink.

CONTENTS

  • Reading Comprehension Questions: These questions check students' understanding of the key concepts, including density, buoyancy, and their real life applications.
  • Activity: Predicting and Testing Buoyancy: Students predict whether certain objects will float or sink based on their density. They can then do an experiment by placing each object in water and recording their observations into a data table.
  • Calculating Density: Students choose one of the objects from the experiment and use the formula for density to perform a calculation.
  • Reflection: Students reflect on what they have learnt and explain the concept of buoyancy and density, providing examples.

BONUS ACTIVITY

  • Designing a Buoyant Boat: Have students show their creativity, while at the same time reinforcing their understanding of buoyancy and denisty! In this take they are encouraged to consider how density and buoyancy principles can be applied to their designs.
  • Extension idea - students test their design by building it and placing it in water to see if it floats (or sinks!).
