Descriptive Writing: Describing Characters, Settings, Events
Help your students…
• Strengthen understanding of the connection between visual and written information
• Determine the moment the illustration depicts
• Use illustrations to write richer and more complete descriptions
• Gain understanding of how illustrations provide story details
• Describe characters by how the text and/or the illustrations depict them
• Easily compare characters by character trait – See EXAMPLE A (above)
• Describe a setting with words that relate to the text and/or the illustration
• Describe an event with words that relate to the text and/or the illustration
• Use information from the illustration and text to demonstrate a better understanding of the relationship between the characters, setting, and/or event
• Practice using key vocabulary terms
Key Vocabulary: describe, characters, settings, events, story details, illustrations
Suggested use: Introduce, review, and/or reinforce descriptive writing.
