Description

Are your students struggling with bland descriptions? Stop telling your students to "add more detail" and start giving them the tools to capture the world on the page. This Free Descriptive Writing Walk is an engaging, comprehensive lesson that takes students from analyzing classic literature to producing their own vivid, sensory-rich prose.

Whether you are taking a stroll around the school grounds or using the included Virtual Walk PowerPoint, your students will learn to imitate the sensory memory of Sandra Cisneros, the natural imagery of John Steinbeck, or the haunting details of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I love how this lesson bridges the gap between literary analysis and creative writing. Using Steinbeck and Cisneros as models gave my students high-level mentor texts as models. The sensory scavenger hunt is also an engaging way to get students out of their seats and into their writing. The materials are easy to use and the included Virtual Walk PowerPoint was a lifesaver for my students who were absent. Thank you for sharing such a high-quality lesson for free!
