Descriptive Statistics Case Study (Unit 2) – Business Size

Do you have students in class who are always asking “When will we ever use this?” If so, this Case Study is for you! Each Case Study features actual data from a real-world context and questions that illustrates the important concepts of the chapter. It is also a good way to highlight jobs in the work force that use statistics on a daily basis!

In this particular Case Study we look in at data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The study compares the number of manufacturing businesses per state with the number of employees at each manufacturing business.

Students will be asked to calculate mean and standard deviation for a frequency distribution, describe the distribution, and explain their reasoning.

The Case Study is a great end of chapter activity to give to students to wrap up the chapter. It is also a good informal assessment to use, even as a review, before a chapter test.

Answer Key and Helpful Hints for teachers are included along with the Case study.
