How to Write a Descriptive Essay
This descriptive writing unit is perfect for teaching how to write a descriptive 5 paragraph essay. It begins with introducing an essay example that can be analyzed as a class. Using a checklist, students can look for essential elements of a descriptive essay and circle them with different colored markers.
The following lessons include choosing a topic (a season, holiday, or special place) and using a graphic organizer for pre-writing. Next, the rough draft is broken down into 5 different lessons, focusing on only 1 paragraph per day. Finally, students can use a revising/editing checklist to polish their final pieces! I've included multiple final draft pages, as well, to help fit the needs of all students.
The descriptive writing example includes:
*5-paragraph essay format: introduction, 3 body paragraphs, closing
*hook
*thesis statement
*topic sentences and details
*use of adjectives and sounds
*closing
What else is included with the simple descriptive essay example?
*2 weeks of lesson plans
*labeled student notes (in color and b/w)
*graphic organizer
*slot notes for students who need extra support
