Description
You may send this home for Distance Learning!
Multi-Digit Multiplication Project Based Learning! The “main” project is designing a resort and then applying addition, & multi-digit multiplication to determine capacity and start-up costs. Optional Activities include: Area, Perimeter, Division, Percent, Persuasive Writing, Analysis, Write an Investor’s Pitch, Make a Brochure, & Write a SUPERBOWL Commercial.
You can do as much or as little of this project as you want. I started it as a final project for multi-digit multiplication and then kept going. Print the pages you want to do, skip the rest.
Name & Design Your Resort. Students decide what kind of resort they want: Beach, Mountain, Ski… and a name for their resort. There are pre-made squares to represent 1,2 & 3 bedroom units and squares for “other” rooms, such as a restaurant, lobby, or fitness center. Print and cut out the units or let kids design their resort digitally. Once they have the blueprint of their buildings, you can have them draw additional features such as landscaping, walkways, hiking trails, and parking lots.
MATH: After completing their posters, students use their blueprint to fill in the charts to determine information such as the max capacity and start-up cost to build their resort. The start-up costs are broken into sections to make it more manageable.
Show Me the Money! Students set a price for the units and determine revenue at 100% and 75% full capacity. Then they determine how long it would take to recoup their start-up expenses.
Oops! The boss is UPSET! Students analyze what was included in the start-up costs and identify things they would need to build their resort that were left out.
AREA & PERIMETER – Flooring & Outer Walls - Students find the total area and perimeter of their resort
INVESTORS PITCH PERSUASIVE WRITING - Write a detailed pitch to potential investors.
MARKET and ADVERTIZE Students pick one of the following. Design a trifold brochure to advertise your 5-Star Resort. OR Write a detailed script for a television commercial to be aired SUPERBOWL SUNDAY!
