Description

For gifted and talented development

This hands-on activity strengthens brain development, executive functioning skills, and number sense.

Designed for Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade, students practice matching colors and numbers by replicating a given dice grid on a blank grid. This activity encourages students to use working memory, fine motor skills, and problem-solving strategies—all critical components of brain development for early learners.

How It Works:

  1. Students look at the provided dice grid.
  2. They identify the number of dots and color of each dice.
  3. On the empty grid, they replicate the pattern by writing the matching number using the correct color crayon.
  4. Continue until the empty grid matches the dice grid exactly!

Brain Development and Learning Advantages:

This activity promotes brain development by engaging several key areas:

  • Visual-Spatial Skills: Matching numbers and colors requires students to interpret patterns and transfer them accurately.
  • Working Memory: Students must remember and replicate information as they complete the grid.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Using crayons to write numbers and color within grids strengthens hand muscles and improves handwriting readiness.
  • Executive Functioning Skills:
    • Planning and Strategy: Deciding how to approach the task systematically.
    • Focus and Attention to Detail: Staying on task and following multi-step directions.
    • Cognitive Flexibility: Adapting if mistakes are made.

These benefits support students in problem-solving, organization, and task management, which are critical life skills.

Skills Addressed:

  • Brain Development: Visual-spatial awareness, working memory, and fine motor coordination
  • Executive Functioning: Focus, planning, strategy, and self-regulation
  • Number Sense and Color Association: Matching quantities and colors through playful learning

Suggestions for Use:
