Description
Get students thinking like scientists with this hands-on dichotomous keys insects activity.
This Dichotomous Keys Insects Worksheet challenges students to classify and group insects using common and uncommon characteristics. Students practice both text-based and visual dichotomous keys, working with five organisms, including a tricky pill bug! Ideal for reinforcing taxonomy, classification, and observation skills, this resource is perfect for biology lessons, science centers, or independent practice.
With differentiated options and scaffolding, students can build confidence while creating clear, logical keys, strengthening their scientific reasoning, observation, and classification skills.
✏️ What’s Included & How to Use
✨ Teacher notes: Ideas and tips for teaching dichotomous keys and a brief explanation on how students can achieve success with the included practice problems.
✨ Labelled Insect Diagram (Characteristics): The lady bug labelled with common/uncommon characteristics. Perfect for a quick refresher of insect parts and to address key insect vocabulary.
✨ Insects Dichotomous Key Problem: The worksheet tasks students to classify the 5 organisms by their characteristics first via a table of similarities and differences. This then scaffolds them to create text and visual dichotomous keys. I've provided you with two versions of the problem (characteristics given or no characteristics) for easy differentiation.
✨ Answer Keys: Provided for your convenience!
✨ Blank Master: For your own personal use in creating more practice problems, or for students to create their own, or even as an assessment piece.
🧮 How to use this dichotomous keys worksheet:
- Print single-sided for individual practice or double-sided for extra challenge (students make TWO different keys!)
- Great for review, independent or group work, homework, or assessment
- Works well following a Doodle Notes introduction to dichotomous keys or as a standalone activity
- Perfect for students familiar with reading and creating dichotomous keys
