Product Description

* IMPORTANT: The Google form version of this activity will only work for you if you have a Google account. If you already have a gmail email address, you have free access to Google Drive through that account. If you do not have access to a Google Drive account, you will not be able to use these documents. Please make sure that you have set up a Google account with access to Google Drive before purchasing this product.

** IMPORTANT: Students do no need an account to use and complete the Google form version of this assignment, but you must have an account to download them, set them up and manage them.

*** IMPORTANT: Your purchase will provide you with instructions needed to download a copy of the Google form documents from my own personal Google Drive. You can only do this if you have a Google Drive account yourself. You will not be downloading the actual activity from my TpT store.

**** IMPORTANT: In order for students to use the Easel version of this activity, they must have a Google account and username.

Although it is not a video of this product, the video preview included with this product shows (1) how the student sees these activities on their device, and (2) the spreadsheet that you as a teacher will have access to in order to review students responses. You can also experience the student view of one of these activities by clicking the link Energy Basics Learning Activity.

This activity is student-centered and is usually done as cooperative learning activity in a group setting (although these type activities can also be used as individual and/or enrichment activities). Most often the teacher serves as a facilitator in these type activities.

This activity can easily be utilized as distance learning activity. Once you have set up the activity it can be assigned online, in any way that you communicate electronically with your students. The students log in to the assignment, enter their name, and then work through the assignment. Once they click submit, their name, grade on the assignment, and responses are automatically sent to a spreadsheet in your Google Drive (assuming that you have set up a spreadsheet according to instructions provided in the documentation).

In addition to being graded automatically, the product supplies instant item analysis for all questions. This gives teachers instant data on the subject matter that is being taught. This allows for a very quick and effective method for determining areas of both mastery and deficiency for your students.

Through trial and error, I have discovered that using these activities as an introductory assignment is a great tool for assessing prior knowledge before I begin teaching a concept. The activity is set up in an instructional quiz format that allows students to: (1) demonstrate prior knowledge, and (2) discover and gain additional knowledge for themselves before we actually begin class discussions of the lesson objectives.

This purchase will give you access to 1 completely digital activity which your students can use from any internet ready device.

The topics covered in this lesson:

  • somatic vs. stem cells
  • totipotent, pluripotent, and multipotent stem cells
  • zygote, morula, blastocyst
  • trophoblast, embryoblast
  • embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells
  • a 20 point self-grading assessment accompanies the Google form instructional activity
  • the Easel activity contains a comparable 27 question assessment

When you purchase this product, you will not be downloading the actual activity. It is not possible to zip these types of files, so you will instead be downloading a detailed set of instructions, complete with screenshots, on how to copy and download the document from my Google Drive to yours. The instructions also provide directions to help you set up the spreadsheet that will compile student responses.

Once you have completed the download and set it up to record student submissions you will have your own copy of the activity as well as a spreadsheet of submitted responses in your Google Drive. You will be granted permission to edit the questions and answers, question types, the order of the questions, and the number of questions for each activity. You will be given permission to add or delete questions to fit your personal needs. You will not have permission to resale or to post or link on the internet for public access (only your students should be given access to the activity).

This activity is completely digital. It is also self-grading. Once a student has completed the assignment and submitted their responses, the data from their assignment will automatically be stored in an accompanying spreadsheet which will also be located in your Google Drive. The spreadsheet will contain not only the number of questions that each student answered correctly but also a list of their individual responses to each question. This is a good tool for identifying areas of understanding and deficiency areas before you begin to cover the topic.

The activity is designed to guide students on a learning journey. It should typically be used as an introductory assignment - before you cover the material in class. I typically have students work individually on the assignment for 10-15 minutes and then put them in cooperative learning groups to complete the activity.

It usually requires somewhere between twenty to thirty minutes for all students to complete the activity, although the times will vary depending upon the amount of content that is covered in the activity and the ability levels of your students. Once the students have completed the activity, I typically use them as a review tool for the topic as we go back over the lesson in a class group discussion.

Diana, I'm sorry that you were not completely satisfied with this product. The description, I think, clearly denotes this as a Google doc activity but if you could contact me at GreatScienceStuff@gmail.com I could maybe help you find a way to make this more user friendly for you and your students.

My learners said it did help them with the exam revision on genetic and early embryonic development. They reported that some of the questions were a bit basic, they would have liked them to be a bit more challenging. However, I was able adapt it for my next group of learners.

Jilly, Thanks for the review. The learning activities have the option to edit the questions and I'm pleased to know that teachers are able to take advantage of that option.
