Description

Engage students with a variety of DIGITAL skill-building resources. This bundle includes 4 activities that involve applying the rules of Scientific Notation - conversions, operations, and word problems. Students will have fun in a variety yet challenging set of activities. You will enjoy the fact that you don’t have to run to the copy room.

These activities are perfect for small groups and independent practice.

Benefits of going digital?

  • Easy access on any device
  • Students can interact with the activity and save it to their Google Drive for future reference
  • Paper-less. Students can submit their work online.

This bundle includes the following 4 activities:

The "Two Truths and 1 Lie" activity has 3 slides with 9 total questions. Each slide contains two truths and one lie. Students are required to figure out which two problems were answered correctly and which one is wrong. The slides contain basic definitions, as well as converting from standard to scientific and scientific to standard. Students must drag the "TRUTH" and "LIE" boxes to the correct location.

There are two "Matching" activities. Each one has 8 problems; one that involves the application of adding and subtracting expressions written in scientific notation, and the other with multiplying and dividing numbers written in scientific notation. Exponents that are the same and different are included. Students will need to drag and place the matching answer directly under the question.

The fourth activity is a Google Form focused on word problems. This activity has 8 word problems with various applications to applying scientific notation.

Each word problem requires students to analyze the situation and decide which operation should be used to solve (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing).

Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other. For example, estimate the population of the United States as 3 × 10⁸ and the population of the world as 7 × 10⁹, and determine that the world population is more than 20 times larger.
Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.
