Description

This is a digital version of my Surface Area Task Cards . There's also a hybrid print/digital version.

These task cards can be used on a computer that has PowerPoint installed OR a device that is connected to the internet and has access to Google Slides.

These 18 task cards will help your students review key geometric concepts.

-Students will practice finding the surface area of cylinders, cones, spheres, triangular and rectangular prisms, and hemispheres with these 18 task cards.

-Students will have to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of missing sides and should have a basic understanding of the parts of 3D shapes (such as slant height, B = area of the base, etc.) as well as be familiar with the formulas for these 3D figures.

I usually allow my students to use the End-of-Course exam reference sheet for geometry when completing these problems. That way they gain familiarity with the formulas and where they are located on their reference sheet. Formulas vary according to textbook, state standards, etc. For example, some of us may find the surface area of a rectangular prism by finding the sum of the products of the length and width, length and height, and width and height. Others may call the length “base” instead. In the answer key I have used the formula SA = Ph + 2B so that the students get used to using this formula and apply it to any prism where P is the perimeter of the base, h is the height of the prism, and B is the area of the base.

Standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.B.7 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.4 Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving

area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed

of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Instructions:

1. Upload the Task Cards to your Google Drive. (BOTH teacher and students need Google accounts. These are FREE.)

2. Open the Task Cards in Google Slides

3. Give each student a copy of the Surface Area Task Cards Recording Sheet
