Description
Do your students need practice writing words (encoding) with DIGRAPHS after segmenting each word (isolating each sound)? This SCIENCE OF READING ALIGNED DIGRAPH resource is a NO PREP engaging activity for students to complete in a small group or as a whole class activity. It was created to be used during ANY UNIT or MONTH of the year.

The digraphs included in this resource are ch, sh, th, wh, and ck. Some of the pictures begin with the digraphs and some end with the digraphs. All words have SHORT VOWEL sounds.
Please note that this resource uses Elkonin boxes (sound boxes) to help students build phonemic awareness by segmenting words into individual sounds. One sound should be written in each box, but please remember that digraphs are two letters that make one sound. In the word "chip," the /ch/ sound is one sound, but uses two letters to make that sound. When writing the word "chip," the "ch" should be written together in one box, the "i" is written in a box by itself, and the "p" is written in a box by itself. There are 3 (sounds) boxes for this word, but 4 letters. If you are unsure of where letters should be written, I have provided ANSWER KEYS for every page showing exactly what letters go in which boxes.
**Some images are repeated on pages. There are fewer clip art pictures for some of the digraphs than others.
NOTE: Your students will benefit more from completing these digraph worksheets as a small or whole group with the teacher naming each picture for them rather than as an independent activity. Some of the clip art may be hard for the students to figure out independently. This is why a "Name that Picture" page and an ANSWER KEY to every page is provided to prevent any confusion of the picture names. Clip art to clearly show each word is difficult to find to have a symbol for words with ch, sh, th, wh, and ck.
**Some words in this resource have 3 sounds and other words have 4 sounds with beginning or ending blends. All words have SHORT VOWEL sounds.
The digraphs on each page are listed below. Some are at the beginning of words and some are at the end of words. The exact words on every page are listed below and all pages can be viewed in the PREVIEW.
Page 1: ch (3 & 4 sounds)
2: sh (all have 3 sounds)
3: th and wh (3 & 4 sounds)
4: ch, sh, th, and wh (all have 3 sounds)
5: ch, sh, th, and wh (all have 3 sounds)
6: ck (ending) (3 & 4 sounds)
7: ch, sh, th, wh, and ck (3 & 4 sounds)
8: ch, sh, wh (all have 4 sounds)
This 17 page pack has 8 student pages with 9 digraph graphics on each page. There is a picture of a DIGRAPH word in each of the nine spaces. There are 3 or 4 boxes (one box for each sound in the word) under each picture for students to write each word after sounding out and stretching each word. There are 8 ANSWER KEY pages, and one NAME THAT PICTURE page. This resource is a PRINT and GO pack!
If you go over the pictures enough times so that the students know what they are, this also makes a great self-checking literacy center. Slide the sheets in a page protector pocket and use a dry erase marker for writing, and then put the answer key on the back side so that students can check their answers on their own. Please make sure you have named each picture for the students several times before assigning this as an independent activity since the name of many of these pictures may not be clear to students.
The PREVIEW shows all pages included in the resource.
There is a "Name that Picture" page that tells the word for each picture in case there is a question about the picture name. Keep the page handy when using all eight pages.
***I plan to make more of these DIGRAPH resources. I also plan to create more resources for blends, CVCe, and vowel teams as well. Please be patient. I am a one person "team" who teaches in a classroom every school day too. Thank you for your support!
**The digraph pictures used in this resource are the same pictures used in the digraph egg, pot of gold, heart, mitten, and snowman resources. The order of the pictures on each page has been shuffled.

**I have many CVC resources available (link below): cats, dinosaurs, apples, hearts, snowmen, pots of gold, eggs, leaves, acorns, pumpkins, turkeys, squirrels, gifts, gingerbread men, Christmas trees, lights, wreaths, snowflakes, penguins, mitten, polar bears, and so many more!

Page 1: chick, chip, chop, chest, check, chin, lunch, bench, chat
2: dish, ship, rush, shed, shack, wish, fish, shop, shut

7: bench, check, chick, whack, flash, brush, shack, cloth, thick
8: chest, trash, lunch, champ, crush, ranch, whisk, crash, chimp
If students finish early, have them flip to the back of their paper and write a sentence with each word on the front. Students can also color the pictures after completing the page.
Students love using their mini slinkies to stretch out the words.
