Description

This is an activity that I've created based on the story 'Dim Sum for Everyone' by Grace Lin, where "Everyone eats a little bit of everything!" There are several other children's stories on dim sum, which can also be integrated with this activity.

The matching and memory activity is loosely based on the game "Shopping List", just a bit more niche! It can be used as a integrated activity after reading the story to the children during a shared reading session. The resource can also be used as a follow up activity, or as a learning or dramatic corner for your children in your classroom or at home.

*For more advanced learners, it also integrates counting money (in dollars) into the activity, where children have to add up the sum the dim sum orders on each dining card.

This digital resource includes:

  • Dim Sum Menu poster
  • Dim Sum Dining Game how-to-play
  • 4 Restaurant Table cards (fits 8 dishes)
  • Dim Sum dishes counters (16 dishes)
  • 6 Dining Order cards (With icons)
  • 6 Dining Order cards with Prices (Without icons)

This resource can be printed and laminated, and children can utilise with the recipes independently in a learning or dramatic corner. The templates can be printed and laminated, and you can attach velcro behind each of the dishes and the table cards.

***Optional: You can prepare a "dim sum cart", dim sum baskets, child chopsticks or tongs, aprons, play ingredients (I have made mine out of felt and paper before) to make the learning even more realistic.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
